Bratwurst?

I have been pondering this sausage for a loooong time. :-)
Any thoughts?

As I understand it, in German "Brat" means "frying", and "Wurst" is sausage.
Sooo, a Bratwurst would be any sausage for frying. Right?

Apparently, the Johnsonville brand sausage has become our definition of a "Bratwurst".
Personally, I am not at all impressed with that product. It's just OK, in other words, it's non-offensive and that seems to be about it.

Then how come it has become the standard and is so popular with the grillers?

Inquiring minds want to know?

;-)
