propane heat for refrig smoker

I made a smoker aout of an old refrig and put in a bradley smoker. I'm trying to
use propane as the heat source to obtain a constant temperature, but it seems when I regulate the temp. down to far, the propane gives off a black soot. What is available to use propane to maintain a constant clean heat?
