PLEASE help with gas smoker that won't smoke!

We built a gas smoker using an old upright freezer. It is heated by a single burner propane stove. We cut 3 2" holes in the bottom of the freezer for air inlet DIRECTLY under the stove and a 6" stovepipe for the outlet.
Everything is working properly...heat is correct, the propane flame stays lit, but when we put a pan of sawdust on top of the stove, it doesn't smoke! However, when you open the door, it starts smoking within 30 seconds!
Obviously, no oxygen is getting to the chips. We are thinking another hole or two off to the sides of the burner may solve the problem...but aren't sure.
Did any one else here experience this problem or have any suggestions as to how to solve it? write me at islandguy52@sbcglobal.net
