Smoker heat source

After reading several of the home made smoker questions, I want to build my own. The only quesion remaining is the heat source. I see the smokehouseplans use electric, and there is another one using propane(afterburner). What are advantages/disavantages. I will be using and old metal fridge for ribs/meat/jerky/fish.
